Frequently Asked Questions
New Family Welcome Letter 2010
Can my child attend the Youth Ministry classes?
Yes! Bring your child to church with you. Classrooms are staffed and ready to receive young people starting at 10:15 am. on Sunday mornings. Worship Services and Youth Education classes begin at 10:30.
Does my child need to be registered?
YES! Unity Spiritual Center, in compliance with the Association of Unity Churches, requires every youth in attendance have a completed Registration form and Medical Release form on file. Blank forms are available in every classroom and in the wall bin above the YFM bulletin board located in the hallway by the church office. You may leave your completed forms with the classroom teacher or YFM Director.
What do the kids do in class?
In a fun and loving manner the children are guided in the Unity teachings using curriculum provided by the Association of Unity Churches. Concepts are explored through prayer and meditation, both Bible and contemporary stories, discussion, songs, creative expression and activities appropiate for each age group.
May I observe during class time?
YES!! Parents and Guardians are always welcome!
Do I need to sign my child in every Sunday?
YES!! Please sign in your children on the clipboard in each classroom. Children will also be signed out from the classroom by the same guardian following the Worship Service. Uniteens and YOUer's are able to sign themselves both in and out of class, although, we greatly appreciate meeting the parents of our teens.
What is a "Family Worship Service"?
Unity Spiritual Center on occasion offers an intergenerational worship experience appropiate for all ages of our Spiritual Family to worship together in the Sanctuary. Childcare and activities will be provided in the Youth Ministry for children under school age only.
Are there outside activities?
The YOU (High School) participate in 4 or 5 "Rallies" or retreats a year. These trips lasting from a weekend to a full week are funded by various prosperity projects.
The Uniteen (Middle School) have the opportunity attend one retreat per year and typically organize a few local overnights, which are sometimes called "lock-ins".
Other church-related outside activities are "family" oriented for participants of all ages. These activities are announced in the Sunday services, printed in the bulletin & Newsletter and posted as a special event on our website.
What is a "Rally" or retreat for teens?
A "Rally" is where teens and their adult Sponsors (chaperones) from many states within the South Central Region of Unity Churches get together to learn and consciously practice spirituality. Each "Rally" has a Unity based theme and is conducted by both teens and adults. Small group sessions will have one or two adults in attendance, but the actual facilitating is done by the teens who demonstrate leadership.
What is an overnight or "lock-in"?
An overnight, which are sometimes called a "lock-in" is where YOU or Uniteens, with proper adult supervision, spend the night at the church. They come together to enjoy social time, work on team building, plan activities and fundraisers or do a service project. These gatherings are always a fun filled time of laughter, friends and of course food!
How can I volunteer in Youth Ministry?
Many levels of volunteer service are available in the YFM. There are both the in-classroom opportunities working with the youth as well as behind the scenes data entry, craft preparation and assistance in seasonal events. All volunteers serve on a twice a month rotating basis and are provided with a complimentary CD of the Worship Service when they are in the classroom.
In order to safely provide for the continued well being of our children, youth and teens Unity Spiritual Center has policies in place regarding volunteers who will serve directly with the young people. Adults considering volunteer service in the Youth & Family Ministry will need to complete a Volunteer Application, provide 3 personal referrances and agree to a Criminal Background Check performed by an outside service. Youth Ministry Volunteer Applications and volunteer Job Descriptions are available through the Youth & Family Ministry Director.
